"It's great to be able to customize the Polaris checkout screen with patron data elements of our choice. It maximizes the efficiency of the checkout process. And with 15 agencies circulating over 7.1 million items per year, it matters."

Polaris Library Systems and ALA Partner on Capitol Hill
READ Program to Promote Libraries and Literacy

June 21, 2007 - On Tuesday, June 26, busloads of librarians and library supporters from across the country will descend upon Capitol Hill for "Library Day on the Hill," to call attention to the value of today's libraries, as well as the issues the library community is facing. Threats to funding, library closures and reduced hours are just a few of the battles at hand in public, school, academic and special libraries around the country. The librarians will be in Washington to attend the ALA (American Library Association) 2007 Annual Conference.

Polaris Library Systems will participate as a special partner in this unique opportunity to showcase the value and importance of libraries. Polaris will set up a studio and take pictures of Members of Congress holding their favorite books, based on the ALA's well-known Celebrity READ poster concept. The ALA will later make posters that Members of Congress can use back in their districts to help promote libraries and literacy.

"We are very excited to partner with ALA on the READ program at Capitol Hill," said Bill Schickling, President & CEO of Polaris Library Systems. "Our mission at Polaris is to help libraries better serve their communities. The event at Capitol Hill provides an opportunity for Members of Congress to demonstrate their commitment to libraries and the communities they serve."

This is an extension of an ongoing READ partnership with ALA Publishing, a collaboration in place since spring 2006 to provide attendees at selected national and regional conferences a personalized mini-READ poster as a souvenir. Polaris provides the studio space, photographer, and finished photos on the conference exhibit floor, where the lines of people waiting to have their photo taken with a chosen book are becoming legendary.

Using the trademarked Celebrity READ art files to create personalized posters has become a recognizable and effective way to promote literacy. Libraries, schools, and government offices nationwide are promoting reading in their communities with "celebrities" as varied as successful grade-school students, local government officials, favorite teachers, and beloved librarians.
