Standards
Since its inception, Polaris Library Systems has participated in the development, testing, and implementation of standards in the library and information science field. In addition to library standards, we actively strive to incorporate data processing and telecommunications standards into our products and services.
Polaris Library Systems has been a voting member of NISO since 1989. As such, we're involved in review and balloting of NISO standards. In addition, Polaris Library Systems actively participates in various groups working on standards of particular current interest. For instance, Polaris Library Systems is an active participant in both the Z39.50 Implementers Group (ZIG), NCIP Implementers' Group (NCIP-IG), and the Serials Release Notification committee of the ONIX for Serials NISO/Editeur Joint Working Party. Polaris Library Systems has sent representation to the Metasearch Initiative and participates in the work of Committee AZ (Networked Reference Services) and Committee AY (Library Statistics). In addition, Polaris Library Systems maintains compliance to World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) HTML recommendations. Since 1994, the W3C has developed recommendations for common protocols that promote the evolution of the World Wide Web and ensure interoperability. Polaris Library Systems also supports ISO/IEC 10646 (Unicode) and ISO 10160-10161 (Interlibrary Loan).
Polaris Library Systems is a Microsoft Certified Solution Provider (MCSP) and Microsoft Independent Software Vendor. In order for Polaris Library Systems to retain its status as an MCSP, Polaris development must adhere to the rigid programming standards established by Microsoft, Inc. Polaris Library Systems undergoes an extensive yearly review of its continued adherence to these standards. Polaris Library Systems is able to take advantage of various Microsoft development features, such as the .NET environment, which is used for the Polaris ActivePAC subsystem.
